My inspiration for this painting came from Kim Gwan-Hong, who was a civilian diver who helped recover many people from the Sewol Ferry. Before he died, he said he saw many small birds flying above the water when they were leaving. He mentioned that they sounded like the students crying not to leave them behind. My painting is dedicated to him and the other civilian divers that did as much as they could when others would not take action. It is these unsung heroes that we should also remember. I admire their bravery and personal sacrifice. In my painting, you will find 5 small black birds, the same black birds that Kim Gwan-Hong spoke of. These birds represent the remaining 5 students that have not found their way back home.
